Extensive rangeof EN45545-
compliant insulationmaterials
for railwayvehicles
Following the successful launch of Armaflex Rail SD, Armacell
hasnowextended its rangeof flexible, closed-cell insulationmaterials
for railway vehicle construction. All Armaflex Rail productsmeet the
high requirements of the new European fire protection standard EN
45545. Theyachievehazard level HL2or 3and canevenbe installed in
sleeping cars and couchettes which are operated on underground
track sections or in tunnels. The completelynewmaterials – including
halogen-free and covered insulation – have very good fire properties
and develop extremely little smoke. Armaflex Rail products protect
refrigerant pipework, air ducts and other components against energy
losses and condensation.
TheArmaflexRail products at a glance
Armacell provides innovative system solutions for insulating refrigera-
tion and air-conditioning systems in vehicles ranging from trams to
high-speed trains. Thenew technologies ensuremore safetyand com-
fort on the tracks.
Armaflex Rail SD
:
The elastomeric insulationmaterial with improved
flame-retardant properties and low smoke density achieves HL2, R1
under EN 45545 and is also classified under the national fire protec-
tion standardsNFPA130, GOST12.1.044-89 andDIN5510-2.
ArmaflexRail SD-C:
The first closed-cell insulationmaterial for use in
areas requiring thehighesthazard level –HL3. Theproduct isequipped
withMicroban® technology and is covered with an attractive, shiny-
metallic surface.
Armaflex Rail ZH:
The first halogen-free, closed-cell insulationmate-
rial toachieve theclassificationHL2, R1underEN454545. Theproduct
not only has very good flame-retardant properties and low smoke
density, it alsominimizes the risk of secondary damage due to acidic
fire gases.
Armaflex Rail ZH-C:
The first halogen-free, closed-cell insulation
material for applicationswith the highest requirements regarding the
materials used (HL3, R1). Armaflex Rail ZH-Chas aUV-resistant cover-
ing which protects the insulationmaterial against mechanical impact
and is very easy to clean.
Neat and simple installation
ThenewArmaflex Rail productswill soonbe available as tubes, sheets,
self-adhesive sheets and tapes in the usual insulation thicknesses and
areonlysold tooriginal equipmentmanufacturers (OEMs) in the railway
vehiclesector.Agreatadvantageof thesyntheticrubber,whichbecomes
particularly apparent in the tight installation situations in rail vehicle
construction, is itshighly flexiblenature. Thisallows it tobe fittedsimply
evenon complex fittings andequipment.
Tighterfireprotection requirements for railwayvehicles
In a fire, low smoke density can be of vital importance in order to
allow passengers and staff to escape and be rescued quickly and
safely.For thisreason, thenewEuropeanstandardEN45545defines
tighter requirements for the firebehaviourofmaterialsandcompo-
nents. The fireprotection standard came into force inAugust 2013.
During the transition period it applies alongside the national stan-
dards (suchasBS6853,DIN5510,NFF-16101),whichmustbewith-
drawnbyMarch2016.
